Hotel Suisse Kandy
This colonial Hotel, rising amidst three acres of landscaped splendour, is ideally located right beside the historic ‘Kandy Lake’ and cradled between two well-weeded Mountain ranges. Yet amazingly, it is but a few minutes walk to the city center and other places of tourist and historic interest. The Temple of the Sacred tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha, the Archaeological Museum, the Kandyan Arts and Crafts Association, the Market place, the central bus stand and the railway station.
The first phase of the extension and renovation program completed was the construction of a new shopping arcade, thirty five additional rooms, expansion of public areas, installation of an ultra modern lift, complete modernization of the main kitchen and installation of telephones in all guest rooms. The proposed second stage which concentrated on the rooms and bathrooms and at the same time preserved the colonial atmosphere of the Hotel was completed, and the Food and Beverage outlets too were given a face lift. All this designated to add to the standards and facilities of the most fastidious infividual, who demands nothing less than the very best.
History Behind Hotel Suisse
Steeped in history, the Hotel Suisse has a charm of it’s own that catches the atmosphere of Kandy’s past glory, with more characters than most of it’s modern counterparts. In the Seventeenth century, it was the residence of the Chief Minister of the Royal Granary. However, in 1818, this property was acquired by the British and occupied by an Officer of ‘Haramby House’ and was sold to a Swiss Lady, Madam Burdayron, who ran it as a guesthouse. This, then was the beginning of the present Hotel Suisse. Another interesting factor is that during the Second World War from 1943 to 1945, Hotel Suisse was used as the Headquarters of the South East Asia Command, under the Command of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Supreme Allied Commander.
It could also be recalled that Hotel Suisse catered to State Banquets hosted by His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka during the visits of Heads of State such as the Crown Prince of Japan, the King and Queen of Nepal, the Queen of England and “Prince Phillip, Rt. Hon. Margeret Thatcher and Mr. Dennise Thatcher and his Excellency Zia Ul Haq of Pakistan.
Mention might also be made that Hotel Suisse has been the selected choice of many leading Hollywood and other International Film personalities during production and shooting of acclaimed movies whilst on location in The City of Kandy, some being Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy of “ET” and “Indiana Jones - The Temple of Doom” fame, John & Bo Derek. “Blue Peter” a British Broadcasting production, Peter Shepherd of “Sacrifice”, Anthony Thomas of Hollywood and Chandram Rathnam of “Mountbatten of Last Viceroy”, Iron Triangle and “Trail of the Cobra”.
