Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya

Body:

An elegant High Tea on a manicured lawn; sip a stiff brandy by the blazing fire after a round of golf in the chill air. Is it England in the Days of the Raj? It may be the 21st century, but colonial splendour still reigns in all its past glory at the Grand Hotel. Built in 1891, this was the palatial residence of the former Governor of Sri Lanka, Sir Edward Barnes; today we offer the ultimate in comfort and the best of traditions from the ‘good old days’ to all who seek the charms of our famed hill country landmark.

Accommodation

Old world charm and elegant comfort welcomes you in the 154 deluxe rooms, with peaceful views of misty hills. Superior luxury awaits in 3 Presidential Suites and 4 Junior Suites. From there, you can admire the beautifully laid out, award winning gardens where rare roses bloom. Hot baths and warm heating will keep you cosy in the cold nights, and with 24 hour room service at hand, a steaming frothy cocoa is yours, even past midnight.

Fine Dining

Here, a truly magnificent and extensive array of gourmet cuisine from the west and the east is yours to indulge in. The expansive Main Restaurant (Barnes Hall) offers equally vast buffets – breakfast, lunch and dinner with show kitchens that create your choice of fare to perfection. Offering both Western and Eastern menus, its reputation is legendary. The Supper Club Bar offers a headier atmosphere with music and dancing, while the Lounge is more intimate, with a la carte meals. (??) The Coffee Shop with its blazing hearth serves light meals and snacks throughout the day. At nightfall, slip back a century or more at the Traditional Bar for some fine old malt and a game of Billiards while a hearty log fire looks on. Enjoy a unique dining experience at The Grand Indian Restaurant, with authentic time-honored dishes.

Facilities

Our setting maybe colonial, but our amenities are definitely modern – with cable TV, Mini Bar, high speed internet access and IDD phones including the standard hotel services from laundry, safety deposit boxes and currency exchange to concierge; 24 hour reception and room service. There’s a health centre and a small shopping arcade and Tennis for the more active; and of course the famed Golf Course, right opposite the hotel. We offer banquet and conference facilities for up to 200 guests and a Business Centre for the corporate traveller. With the charming traditional atmosphere and the extensive gardens, we are also the popular choice for local weddings.

Leisure Activities & Excursions

For a tranquil hill country town, Nuwara Eliya has much to offer. In the ‘April Season’ it comes alive with an exciting carnival atmosphere - there’s everything from horse racing (a local Ascot with dressing up on a grand scale) to motor cross, boat rides, flower shows, music and entertainment events, Golf and Tennis tournaments and more to keep you busy. Other pastimes take over ‘off season’. Take a leisurely stroll in the Nuwara Eliya Park or visit the Galway Bird Sanctuary nearby. The Hakgala Botanical Gardens is home to exotic orchids, rare ferns and magnificent roses. Spend a day out at the plantations and factories where Sri Lanka’s renowned ‘High Grown’ tea is produced and admire the myriad waterfalls along the way.

Venture further, and discover the unique beauty of Horton Plains high up at around 7000 ft, and the awe inspiring wonder of ‘World’s End’- a near vertical drop of around 4000 ft. Rare flora and fauna abound here; including deer, jackal and the elusive leopard. Pay pilgrimage to Sri Lanka’s holy mountain ‘Adam’s Peak’ and catch a glimpse of the famous shadow at sunrise. There’s plenty of action for the thrill seeker – white water rafting, rock climbing and trekking, and if you prefer it slow, the colonial charms of the town offer much to explore.
